Carole Gilley (she/her) is a Creative Writing major at Agnes Scott College, and her works demonstrate how the world of screenwriting has room for diversity. Her recent one-act play, -Opolis, is her first foray into playwriting and features LGBTQ+ characters and a thoughtful approach to character building that helps to make casting protocols more inclusive for people of color without compromising on the plot. When she decided to study writing, Carole’s mother encouraged her but warned her that she will have to be the diversity she wants to see in the writing industry. So, instead of waiting for an open seat at the table, she took her mother’s advice and got straight to work creating her own.
